Source notes & limitations

Per-commodity sheets of the fresh-fruit and fresh-vegetable workbooks, farm-weight 'Per capita availability' column. Availability is a disappearance estimate: production plus imports, less exports, non-food use and (for fruit) shipments to US territories, divided by population. It measures what the food supply made available per person, not intake — ERS publishes a separate loss-adjusted series for consumption-like figures and this is not it. Each sheet also prints a retail-weight column derived by a stated conversion factor (0.92 broccoli and peppers, 0.94 avocados, 0.91 grapes); the unadjusted farm-weight column is taken and the factor is disclosed rather than applied. The two workbooks do not share a layout — the fruit sheets carry an extra 'Shipments to U.S. Territories' column and print the 'Farm' sub-header a row lower — so the extraction locates every column by its printed label and then verifies the result arithmetically: farm per-capita must equal food availability divided by population, for every year. Pointed one column right, at the retail figures, that check rejects all four commodities.

Where this source appears

25 records across 7 decades and countries. Documented gaps are included; a source cited for a gap does not establish a value.

0 of 25 records have a current source audit. A transcription check reads a declared numeric field from a pinned local source file; a calculation replay reads its operands and applies the declared method and rounding rule. A source audit does not independently validate the source or every claim in a record. The date is the last successful local audit; the build checks that its bindings still match.
